For those keen to slow down and live a life less busy, simplifying our lives by getting rid of excess stuff is an important step in the process. I recently read ‘Goodbye, Things – On Minimalist Living’ by Fumio Sasaki and wanted to include a quick review here on A Life Less Busy. For many, many years now I have been slowly and steadily reducing the excess stuff in my home. I am certainly not a hard core minimalist but have definitely begun to reap the benefits of living a simpler life with less possessions.
In ‘Goodbye, Things’, which has been translated into English from Japanese, Fumio shares his own journey towards minimalism. Personally I find it incredibly helpful to hear about how other people have taken steps to de-clutter their lives. Reading books like this give me the inspiration and motivation I need to get started on my own home. Fumio talks about his live as a messy, cluttered and relatively unhappy thirty-something and shares how minimising his possessions has lead him to feel not only much happier, but also healthier and far more content with life.
For me, the key message Fumio has to share is that while getting rid of things can be difficult, the guilt and discomfort that you experience by holding on to what you don’t need is far more damaging than just letting things go. It is especially interesting to hear how reducing our physical clutter can lead to improvements in both physical and mental wellbeing.
I would highly recommend this book for those seeking inspiration to live a simpler life as well as to those keen to embrace minimalism. If you enjoyed Marie Kondo’s ‘The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up’ but felt a little intimidated by her structured system, you may find that ‘Goodbye, Things’ offers a gentler push towards getting rid of all that excess stuff.
